    SV5/IZ4AKS – Rhodes, Dodecanese

    By IZ4AKS.

Since my first year of amateur radio, I designed my QSL card using a very old photo find in a canister locked and hidden by my Grandfather.
The picture is a rare shoot of the legendary 281st Squadron leaded by Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia, ahead to a torpedo-armed Savoia-Marchetti SM-79. The photo was taken in Gadurra Airport, in Rhodes, on June 11th 1941. The second from the right is my grandfather Delio and I grew up listening his stories about the Dodecanese war and the aces of the 281st torpedo bombers Squadron, the heavily damaging the cruiser HMS Kent, the successfully attacked the cruiser HMS Glasgow, etc…

Now, thanks to a lucky mix of job scheduling I’m planing to visit Rhodes from April, 9th-16th, 2012.
I will do my best to visit the old Gadurra Airport were my fantasy flew a lot of time in my childhood, palying with model planes. I will remember those times and a part of life of my family.

The opportunity to operate as SV5/IZ4AKS will be possible thanks to the support of Mike Balaskas, SV5BYR, a local active dxer and contester.
Just a reminder: please, do not consider this a dxpedition. I will be active just to gain a brand new point for the DXFC, visiting an entity that is something more for me, than just a prefix.

It is enough for me, this time.
